The publisher of my first novel, a two-volume literary fiction epic, wrote "About the Author" as follows:
H. Melvin James was uniquely prepared to write this epic novel, "Tares among the Wheat." Few writers have such wealth of broad relevant personal experience and rich cultural heritage from which to draw, in developing such diverse characters and far-flung settings as included in this saga.
Melvin was born the seventh of eight siblings on a farm in Oklahoma. After leaving the farm at seventeen he utilized his farming and ranching skills to hire into commercial jobs, paying his own way through two college degrees. Mr. James' varied work experiences, gained throughout his career, contribute authenticity to the fictional characters and their situations, as cleverly described in his writings.
Contributing authenticity to his latest novel, "Death in Tomorrow's Shadow" is his wealth of experience, providing a unique basis for his literary fiction writings. As a teenager, Mr. James harvested grain across the Great Plains from the Red River to the Canadian border. As a young man he picked lemons in California, picked cotton in Oklahoma, and decoded top secret electronic signals in the Arctic Circle.
In his career as an engineer and manager, Melvin accomplished major projects on Air Force One and many other strategic and classified aircraft, built petrochemical equipment for the Middle East, drove transport trucks in Texas, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York, and built computers in Colorado and Kansas.
Mel has skills and certifications to weld steel, fly airplanes, overhaul diesel engines, paint automobiles, program computers, decipher complex telemetry, operate heavy construction machinery, and design, construct, and wire residential, commercial, and industrial facilities.
Mr. James has college degrees in engineering and business administration with minors in computers, management, and environmental science, and years of writing and teaching technical curricula. He has led work crews of hundreds of employees in various industries, managed hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts and in operational budgets, and served as elected mayor of his small town for twenty years.
Mr. James has traveled the world, west to Japan, north to the tip of the Aleutian Islands, south to the Rio Grande, east to Greece and Israel, and to a score of other nations in between.
Each of Melvin's four grandparents participated in the famous 1893 Cherokee Strip Land Run of Oklahoma. Each came from a different ethnic background of European immigrants. His first novel, an epic classic literary fiction, “Tares among the Wheat,” drew on the diverse and rich cultures of his ancestry and their experiences as well as my own. His latest novel is somewhat based on his own experience in the secretive and complex world of international intelligence operations.
