British author Guy N. Smith (1939-2020) was born and brought up in Staffordshire. He began writing at a young age thanks to encouragement from his mother, who had been a published novelist in the 1930s. From the age of 12, Smith had over fifty of his short stories accepted for publication in a local newspaper. As a child, he knew he wanted to be a professional writer. However, on leaving school at 16, he was made to go into banking by his father. Nevertheless, he continued to write in secret. By 1973, Smith had moved to Tamworth with his young family and enjoyed the publication of numerous articles and short stories while still working at the Birmingham Treasury. He felt certain he could become a full-time writer and became determined to get a novel published. Smith heard that New English Library were looking for horror novelists. He submitted a synopsis for Werewolf By Moonlight, which was accepted immediately and published in 1974. The novels Sucking Pit and The Slime Beast followed swiftly – both going on to be reprinted many times and are still hailed as pulp horror classics. Night of the Crabs was the fourth of Smith's novels, launched in the searing hot summer of 1976. Night of the Crabs hit newsagent stands and bookshops just as holidaymakers flocked to Britain's beaches to cool off in the sea. It became a bestseller overnight, and he went on to enjoy a successful full-time career as a writer. Smith never retired from writing and proved extremely prolific over his lifespan of 81 years. In 1977, after the success of Night of the Crabs, Smith moved with his family to live in the Shropshire hills near Wales where he remained for the rest of his life. He is best known for his horror output, with around 80 horror novels to his name, but he also published work in other genres including thrillers, children's fiction and non-fiction, including thousands of countryside articles.
