Dr. Gene Maynard earned his doctorate in theology and spiritual formation at Princeton Theological Seminary where he studied 17th century contemplative spirituality, focusing on Quaker spirituality. He is the director of a doctoral degree program in spiritual formation and leadership at Epic Bible College and Graduate School in Sacramento, CA. The pastor of Upper Room Community Church in Auburn, CA, for eighteen years, the church has become, under his leadership, a formational community. He is the founding CEO of The Compass Center, a non-profit spiritual formation center that offers resources, experiences, and community for people and churches seeking the way to a deeper life with Jesus. He writes Compass: A Spiritual Formation Newsletter found on Substacks and is the host of a spiritual formation podcast called The Trailhead. in 2014, Gene and his wife trekked the El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain, launching a love and passion for hiking and backpacking.
