Born and raised in the small Scottish port of Fraserburgh, Gary Masson is an author, former trawlerman, and businessman whose life is defined by a unique intersection of adventure, history, and human resilience.
Fluent in both English and Spanish, Masson has travelled the globe extensively, cultivating a deep, lifelong passion for history, politics, and space. His profound worldview is anchored by extraordinary, real-world events. In 1988, as a young fisherman, he participated in the rescue efforts during the devastating Piper Alpha oil rig explosion in the North Sea—a tragic night that he will never forget.
Decades later, his dedication to historical exploration led him to the Andes Mountains in 2020, where he journeyed on horseback into the Valley of Tears alongside 1972 plane crash survivor Eduardo Strauch. He describes the trip as one of the most incredible things he has ever seen or done, noting how the breathtaking beauty of the Valley of Tears contrasted with the horrors that the survivors endured in that very same place.
An accomplished astrophotographer, Masson’s love for the cosmos culminated in 2019 when he was the only Scottish guest at the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Gala in Los Angeles. There, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by meeting host Buzz Aldrin and Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke: two of the twelve men who have walked on the Moon.
Today, the father and grandfather channels his rich tapestry of experiences, family heritage, and deep historical research into gripping historical fiction. He is the author of From Tragedy to Eternity, a true story based on his own family’s experiences during the two World Wars, and No Mercy: A Love Story for the Ages, a powerful novel set against the backdrop of WWII France and centred around the horrific events at Tulle and Oradour-sur-Glane.
Masson detests war, and his passion for world peace has been the main driving force in his writing. Indeed, in his preface to No Mercy, he states: “I hate war. There’s nothing good about it. War should never be the last option.”
