Why did the young man strangle his pregnant stepmother in a cemetery? The answer to that question would rip away a veil hiding a family cult marked by domestic violence, physical, emotional and sexual abuse, children secluded from society, and a patriarchal dictatorship based on fear. "Murder in the Graveyard, A Family Cult Tragedy," tells that story. Ironically, it was the same cemetery in Eustis, Fla., where a teen vampire cult held a blood-drinking ritual before killing the parents of one of its members. The 15-year-old girl left with the group but was never charged. I was able to tell that story in "Cold Blooded" (2021). That story and others was included in "Vampires, Gators and Wackos, A Florida Newspaperman's Life." There is the account, for example, of a beautiful, married, middle-school teacher who threw caution and her clothing to the wind to sleep with a young boy. Then, there are cops who are heroes, crooks, or well-intentioned bumblers who let a killer get away with killing his millionaire stepfather. Then, there is harrowing tale of a young widow who is carjacked in a grocery store parking lot, assaulted and shot and her children murdered. Yet, she credits God and her faith with carrying through and sharing her story to inspire others. That account is in my first book, "Unbroken, The Dorothy Lewis Story." As a 50-year newspaper reporter and editor, I’m not satisfied to learn just the facts. I want to know what people are thinking and what drives them to do the things they do. Journalism is filled with zany characters. Like other “inmates,” I am addicted to flashing blue lights, bad newsroom coffee and deadlines that would stress a slug in a coma. Add a mixture of lying politicians, celebrities and certifiable lunatics, and you have a formula for a crazy life. Florida is filled with people who say, “We don’t do it that way back home.” No wonder. Where else can you find alligators swimming in your pool, sinkholes swallowing your house and hurricanes uprooting everything but concrete slabs. I still do freelance reporting and public speaking. I have a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of North Florida.
