Meet Franciska Soares, an Indian-born Kiwi writer who weaves hauntingly poignant stories filled with enigmatic histories, forgotten communities, and spirited, unbowed women. Her characters love challenging the status quo, pushing boundaries, and exploring both ethical and sensual realms. After a fulfilling career as an educator, life took unexpected turns for Franciska. Coping with the loss of her hearing and navigating the disruptions caused by COVID, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery, delving into her family's captivating mixed-race history in India. These events reignited her true passions: words and storytelling. Returning to writing, she recently celebrated the publication of her debut novel 'They Whisper in My Blood,' with her second novel 'A Smatter of Minutes' and a poetry collection titled 'Quiet Enough' set to captivate readers in 2023. When not immersed in the world of poetry and fiction, Franciska finds solace in leisurely strolls along the picturesque Frankton Arm in Queenstown. Despite her hearing loss, she cherishes the melodies of nature, from the songs of birds to her favourite playlist of French love songs. With the solitary instincts of a recluse, Franciska thrives in a life intertwined with memories and writing, where her literary characters become cherished companions. Surrounded by art which she collects, music, and the harmonies of birdsong amidst the snow-capped mountains girdling Lake Wakatipu, she finds the inspiration that fuels her prolific works. Franciska’s unique perspectives breathe life into her captivating tales which are sure to leave an indelible mark on the world of literature.
