Fiona Kuilboer was born and raised in Geelong, Victoria, Australia in a household shaped by resilience and resourcefulness. Her early years taught her strength through challenge, lessons she carried into every stage of her life – from Army Cadets and the Army Reserves to life as an Army wife and mother. Then later, to navigating the complexities of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and hidden disabilities. For over 3 decades, Fiona has shared her life with Anthony, a proud RAEME soldier in the Australian Army. Together, their journey has taken them across almost every state and territory of Australia, raising 2 children along the way – one now an adult with a family of her own and one still at home, keeping life interesting. Fiona is a survivor, someone who understands the quiet courage it takes to keep showing up, day after day. She prefers a simple life alongside Hedwig, her Psychiatric Assistance Dog; a laid-back Kelpie; and a ginger cat with enough personality to run the household. When Hedwig joined Fiona in 2024, he quickly became more than a working partner – he gave her freedom, confidence and the steady presence she needed to reclaim her independence. Through honest storytelling, humour and a generous dose of self-awareness, Fiona shares her lived experience to help others understand what life with a Psychiatric Assistance Dog is really like – not as a fairy tale, but as a journey of grit, patience, resilience and unexpected joy. Hedwig insists on adding: ‘This isn’t just her book – it’s mine too. Together, we brought our stories to life. Every chapter has my paw-print and I’m proud to call myself co-author and Labrador-in-chief – with royalties paid exclusively in snacks.’
