I grew up in Farmington, Maine. As a child, I struggled with reading and writing and was placed in the special education program for students who needed extra support. Because of that, it came as a surprise to many people when I eventually became a writer. It all started with my older brother. When he left for college, he thought it would be fun for us to write a book together as a way to stay in touch. We began working on it chapter by chapter. At first, progress was slow because I was inexperienced and unsure of myself, but together we managed to write about twelve chapters. As college became busier for my brother, he had less time to write. I decided to keep going on my own, and that unfinished project eventually became my first published book. Looking back, that first manuscript wasn't very good, and I had plenty of new ideas I wanted to explore. Instead of immediately revising it, I started writing other stories simply because I enjoyed the process. Before returning to that original book, I had written seven different manuscripts. Then, with the help of my family, I went back and carefully edited the first one until it was ready for publication. Today, I balance writing with my career as an engineer and my responsibilities as a father, so progress is slower than it once was. Even so, I continue writing whenever I can. One of the reasons I love writing is that I often struggle to find books that match my tastes. I frequently finish a novel wishing the author had kept the content a little cleaner or taken the story in a different direction. Rather than wishing those books existed, I decided to write them myself. If I'm the only person who enjoys reading my stories, I still consider that a success. Every time I revisit one of my books, I'm reminded of how much imagination went into creating it. It's also deeply satisfying to look at the books on my shelf as proof that determination can overcome expectations. For anyone who once doubted me because I wasn't the strongest reader or writer in school, those books are a reminder that success isn't always determined by where you start.
