Erik Lie, originally from Norway, is a Professor of Finance and the Head of the Finance Department at the University of Iowa. His teaching and research are deeply rooted in a fascination with human behavior and incentives—an interest that has led to groundbreaking discoveries. Most notably, he uncovered widespread manipulation of executive stock options, sparking federal investigations, numerous lawsuits, and congressional hearings. His findings contributed to the ousting of over 70 corporate executives and helped earn the Wall Street Journal a Pulitzer Prize. In recognition of this work, TIME Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2007. Erik resides in Iowa City, a UNESCO City of Literature and home to the renowned Iowa Writer’s Workshop. Outside of academia, he enjoys spending time with his family and staying active through a variety of sports—from running and soccer to squash, skiing, and windsurfing, especially during visits to his family’s cabin in Norway.
