Edith M. Humphrey is the William F. Orr Professor Emerita of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Prior to emigrating, she taught at several colleges and universities in Canada, and was professor of Scripture at Augustine College, Ottawa, Canada. The author of numerous articles on the literary, rhetorical, and theological study of the Bible, she has also written ten books on subjects as varied as ancient apocalypses and Trinitarian spirituality. In her popular writing she has addressed the Jesus Seminar, the Trinity, sexuality and the human person, the authority of Scripture within the Great Tradition, and Christian spirituality. Since retiring, she has published two children's novels, Beyond the White Fence (ages 7-13), and Down the Valley (ages 8-14). Her third in the "Peacock Series," called Crossing the Creek (ages 9-15), is submitted for publication to Cascade Books, and due for release in 2027. The illustrator for Crossing the Creek is her grand-daughter, Madeleine Summers, who was represented by the figure "Maddie" in the first book of this series. The saints to be visited in Crossing the Creek are St. Sophia (with her three daughters), the righteous Gideon, St. Basil the Great, St. Susanna the Myrrhbearer, and St. Christopher. She is also working on a "non-commentary" on the book of Revelation (which will include a fresh translation), and a book which probes how the Church fathers understood justification and atonement. An active member of the Orthodox Church, and co-chair of the Biblical section of the International Orthodox Biblical Association, she retains strong ties with friends in various denominations, and is well known as a popular speaker at church retreats, ecumenical conferences, and seminary events. She enjoys singing in her church choir, has played oboe in a symphonic band and continues to practice piano duos with a friend. She and her husband Chris, who is an artist, have three married daughters and 26 grandchildren.
