DUNCAN CAMPBELL is the founder of Friends of the Children and an active philanthropist. In 1983, he founded Campbell Global, an investment firm that acquires and manages timberland, before eventually selling it and dedicating his life to helping others. Residing in Portland, Oregon, Duncan and his wife, Cindy, together, have three grown children and five grandchildren. Duncan Campbell’s passion for helping society’s most vulnerable children grew from his own experience as a youth growing up in North Portland in a welfare family where both parents were alcoholics and his father was in prison twice. As a child, he attended Highland/Martin Luther king grade school and Jefferson High school. His challenging childhood experiences eventually inspired him to create a number of children’s organizations, including: Youth Resources, the Children’s Institute, and a nationally recognized mentoring organization, Friends of the Children. Friends of the Children hires full-time professional mentors called Friends who each work with eight seriously at-risk children. Friends of the Children makes a commitment to each child from the end of kindergarten through high school. “I was one of those children,” Duncan says of the youth served by Friends of the Children. “I believe,” says Duncan, “people have a responsibility to reach back and take care of other people who are less fortunate, who by no choice of their own, are in unfortunate circumstances.”Friends of the Children is recognized as a model mentoring program for seriously at-risk children throughout the country. The organization has served thousands of children. We are in multiple locations throughout the U.S. and in the U.K. Early in his career, Duncan was employed as a child-care worker for juvenile offenders at the Donald Long Home in Portland and at the Skipworth Detention Home in Eugene, Oregon. He has worked on the Governor’s Children Agenda, was Chairman of the Multnomah County Juvenile Services Commission, was a founding board member of Children First, and is a board member with the Thrive Foundation for Youth. in addition, he was a delegate to the President’s Summit for America’s Future, and has been a speaker at the White House for the Helping America’s Youth Initiative. Duncan has won numerous awards, including the prestigious national Purpose Prize from Civic Ventures for his impact as a social entrepreneur and champion for children. He is one of 25 Legends in Mentoring in the U.S.
