Dr. William Belan is happiest when he is professionally active
as a writer, teacher, conductor, and producer. He is even happier in
his role of husband and father to three children (one son and two
daughters). He has been trained closely by true mentors including:
Roger Wagner, Donn Weiss, Dennis Shrock, Esther Andreas, Peter
Drucker, and Donald Brinegar, and Robert Fowells. As a professor
he was a Fulbright Scholar to Costa Rica, and as a leader of research
for ACDA he designed a collaborative website with the Library of
Congress for American Choral Music. As a teacher he is professor
emeritus of choral studies at California State University, Los Angeles.
Dr. Belan is author of three books of choral research (Festschrift for
Roger Wagner, English Madrigal, and Latin American Rhythm/ 2nd
edition) and more than 100 published octavos in the area of Latin
American choral music. His latest book is My Stroke: A Pathway to
Recovery and Discovery, the research of the brain and neurology as
applied to his own episode with stroke. He continues to teach courses
as adjunct professor at Chaffey College.
