Dr. Loren Jay Chassels is a highly accomplished internal medicine and emergency physician with nearly two decades of experience in the medical field. A native of Waterford, Connecticut, Dr. Chassels began his journey into service and leadership as a Scout, earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout in 1988 and obtaining his Novice Class Amateur Radio License the same year. His early involvement with the Pine Hill Scout Reservation as a merit badge counselor, lifeguard, and camp commissioner from 1986 to 1990, where he taught wilderness survival and aquatic skills, laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to education and community service. After graduating from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993, Dr. Chassels pursued a Master of Science in Teaching degree at Rowan University, graduating in 1995. He dedicated several years to teaching high school math and science in Alaska and Connecticut before embarking on a 2,160-mile thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 1999, a testament to his resilience and passion for the outdoors. In 2004, Dr. Chassels earned his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences in Kirksville, Missouri. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Creve Coeur, Missouri, in 2007. His career as a hospitalist and emergency physician has been marked by excellence, as evidenced by his board certification in internal medicine. Dr. Chassels continues to give back to his community through his love of teaching, offering to Stop the Bleed classes, Illinois concealed carry courses and amateur radio instruction. In 2022, he achieved the Amateur Extra Class license (KLØT) and became a Volunteer Examiner for the ARRL-VEC. His dedication to wilderness medicine was further recognized in 2023 when he was awarded the Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) degree. The following year, in 2024, he was honored with the Fellow of the American Academy of Internal Medicine (FACP) degree. Dr. Chassels’ career is a remarkable blend of clinical expertise, outdoor adventure, and a commitment to education and service, making him a respected leader in medical and amateur radio communities.
