Dr. Joe Brickner grew up in Ohio but attended college in Kansas at St. Benedict's College (now Benedictine College) where he was a basketball student-athlete and a member of the 1967 NAIA National Championship team. He has always loved the game of basketball, but to put bread on the table, he pursued a business career at a Fortune 50 company where he rose to the Assistant Treasurer position. Nearly 30 years into his business career, he got an opportunity to pursue his dream and become a men’s head college basketball coach at his alma mater. His book, "So, You Want to be a Coach..." is his story, told with the endearing anecdotes that life presents – some will make you laugh, and some will make you cry. (Dr. Brickner not only coached but also was an Associate Professor in the Business School, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.) In late 2022, Dr. Brickner completed writing his second book titled "America: Lost in Place (Musings at 70+)." In this book he analyzes 17 different areas of life in America and compares how things were in the 1950's and '60's when he was growing up to how things are today. His book is not only a nostalgic look at the past, but also a frank analysis of where we are today in our country. He answers the question as to if are we better off or not. His book received a perfect 4 out of 4 rating by the Online Book Club organization. It also was Amazon's number one best seller in two separate categories on December 10, 2023. Dr. B is currently working on his third book. He is now retired living with his beloved bride of over 40 years, Connie. He has two sons, who each have three children of their own. Continuing a family tradition, he has two grandsons playing college basketball. Dr. B still works out every day and competes in age-division basketball tournaments around the country. He recently earned his black belt in Chinese Kenpo Karate/American Jiu-jitsu. He is also a beekeeper and hosted a podcast called "Building with Brick - Foundational Wisdom on Coaching, Careers, and Christ." The podcast interviewed athletic role models and explored just how they became successful. In 2024, he suspended his podcast and became co-host of a national podcast for the Corps of Renewal and Charity (CORAC) along with CORAC founder Charlie Johnston.
