Gary Waddell, Ed.D., writes about attention — what we notice, what we miss, and what it costs us either way. He is the author of Wonder: An Owner's Guide to Your One Extraordinary Life, a collection of lyric essays, and The Art of Everything: Leading for "We" in the Age of "Me", with a foreword by Deborah Meier. He writes Letters2Leaders, a weekly letter read by leaders across education and beyond.

He spent more than three decades in California public schools as a superintendent, counselor, principal, and statewide arts leader. His work closing opportunity gaps for underserved students has been recognized with state and national awards in leadership, education, and human rights.

He holds a doctorate in educational leadership and, before that, a bachelor's degree in drama — which animated his work around arts education and leading through creativity and connection.

A former foster parent and a lifelong advocate for young people on the margins, he grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and lives in Palm Springs, California, where he takes his marching orders from a long-haired Chihuahua named Picasso.
