I've always been a teller of stories. I wrote my first story when I was in elementary school, and I was paid a lovely drawing of a horse. I wrote the story because I was unable to draw a horse as well as my school mates. People ask me "What kind of books do you write?" I know they are looking for the simple, genre answer, i.e. Westerns, Mysteries, Romances, etc. My answer is different. I get interested in a story and go wherever it takes me. It might be a mystery, e.g. "One Dead Fiddle Player," or a western, e.g. "Badges," or it just may be a mixture--because that's where the story takes me. I grew up in Oklahoma and still have a deep love for that place and those people. I'm a graduate of Oklahoma University, and I taught school in the neighbor to the north, Kansas. I went into the army, graduated from Artillery Officer Candidate School and ultimately became a helicopter pilot. I served in Vietnam in 1967/'68. I graduated from the University of California at Irvine in 1970 and spent a season with the Seattle Repertory Company as a contract actor. I began writing short stories while I was working as an instructional designer and developer. Mostly I wrote western stories. I shared the cover of the first issue of "Far West" magazine with Louis L'Amour and V.A. Glover. I sold stories to the magazine as long as it remained in publication and got the cover story, "End of Summer," in the last issue. Unfortunately, that issue was never published. My novel, "Children of the Shadows," was published by Zebra in 1990. The little paperback went into a second printing and sold over 16,000 copies. It is out of print now, but you can still dig up used copies, and I am hoping to do a second edition. I continue to tell stories. I have twelve novels here and I am developing others. I've been married for over 40 years and am shocked that my wife has put up with me for all those years. I have two daughters, both grown with families of their own. "They Say There is a Ghost" was written for my older daughter, and "Dust Devil" for my younger daughter. I am fascinated by the importance of story-telling, in whatever form it takes. Not only is it great fun to create and work out stories, it is a task to be approached with reverence because of how important stories are to people. I come to the role of story-teller with enthusiasm and humility. It is an honor to be able to tell stories that are meaningful to other people. I live in Arizona, West of Phoenix.
