Derroles Taylor is a talented textile artist and fashion designer, creating stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces that blend traditional sewing and garment construction techniques with modern art and design methods. Born and raised in New Orleans, LA, Derroles’ work is heavily influenced by the vibrant and diverse culture of one of the U.S.'s most spirited cities.
The passion for textiles was sparked in childhood when Derroles' grandfather gifted her a sewing machine and a box of scrap fabric from a retired seamstress. Self-taught initially, Derroles started selling creations to schoolmates and peers. Two years of sewing summer education programs, including the Ogden Museum Fashion Show and the Treme Storytelling Quilt Exhibit, cemented her interest and provided mentorship and resources that fueled further growth.
A rotating cloud with a silver lining, Hurricane Katrina interrupted Derroles' second year of college at Xavier University of Louisiana. By chance, she was presented with the opportunity to continue her education at Parsons School of Design at The New School in Manhattan, NY. Here, she was immersed in the world of fashion and design. New York's fast-paced competitive environment gave her the determination to take her skills to new levels.
Ms. Taylor returned to her home of New Orleans armed with her new skills and a sewing machine. "Derroles the Dressmaker" was born. She began working as a dressmaker, combining her skill and talent with the rich cultural influences of the city where she was born. Derroles continued to nurture this passion, culminating in a 24-year journey of formal and informal training and experiences that have shaped a beautiful body of work and artistic expression.
Derroles does not limit her work to fashion design but aims to create wearable textile artworks and installations. The goal is to continuously push creative boundaries beyond past accomplishments. Derroles’ artistic journey continues, with inspirations drawn from creating for the Mardi Gras Indians and the pageantry of Mardi Gras krewe royalty. Working primarily with fabrics such as silk, lace, and chiffon, Derroles loves to layer embellishments and adornments, common in New Orleans' cultural attire. Utilizing both hand-sewing and machine techniques, Derroles creates intricate patterns and designs that tell a story.
Derroles’ artistic mission is to craft beautiful, expressive wearable art that moves and lives as an interpretation of inspiration. The designs often incorporate bold colors, patterns, and textures inspired by New Orleans culture, nature, experiences, and various forms of art.
Derroles’ work appeals to individuals who appreciate fine craftsmanship, uniqueness, and attention to detail. The clientele ranges from fashion-forward individuals seeking custom couture pieces to art collectors looking to add a unique piece to their collection.
