Dean Hovey is the award-winning author of Family Trees: A Pine County Mystery. His Pine County and Whistling Pines books are set in rural Northeastern Minnesota communities and tap into local history, politics, and current events. The Pine County Mystery series features Floyd Swenson, a seasoned investigator, who methodically works through clues and information to track down the bad guys. Floyd has a growing romance with Mary, a flower shop owner, who keeps him grounded. The Whistling Pines Series are cozies set in a senior citizen's residence, featuring Peter Rogers, the recreation director, as the protagonist. The characters keep the readers laughing and Peter's elderly neighbor, Dolores, provides endless side plots, many involving her stock of antique firearms used in her attempts to rid her yard of vermin, from rabbits to moose. In 2019 Dean added the Doug Fletcher series with Stolen Past, Washed Away, Dead in the Water and Death in Shifting Sands, set in Northern Arizona and Padre Island National Seashore. This series features Doug, a retired St. Paul detective, who is drafted by the Flagstaff superintendent to investigate crimes on Park Service lands.
