David McBride has taught African American health, medical care, and U. S. history for over twenty-five years at three universities―University of Illinois (Springfield), State University of New York (Binghamton), and most recently, Pennsylvania State University (University Park). He has authored four books on black health and medical history: Caring For Equality: A History of African American Health and Health Care (Rowman & Littlefield, 2018); Missions for Science: U.S. Technology and Medicine in America's African World (Rutgers U Press, 2002), From TB to AIDS: Epidemics Among Urban Blacks Since 1900 (SUNY Press, 1991; revised 2020, forthcoming); and Integrating the City of Medicine: Blacks in Philadelphia Health Care, 1910-1965 (Temple U Press, 1988). He has also edited (or co-edited) books on other areas of public health like bioterrorism as well as educational history. He has received grants to research black and minority health care policy and medical history projects from major foundations including the Rockefeller Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Simon Rifkind Foundation.
