Daniel Pettus spent forty years building the machines that were supposed to prevent medication errors. Brain monitors in operating rooms. Anesthesia records in Vienna. A box on a kitchen counter that read twenty-one different glucose meters. Infusion pumps wired into the hospital records he helped write the standards for.

He held vice president roles at Alaris, CareFusion and BD, was a member of the founding team at iMetrikus in 1999, contributed to the IHE Patient Care Device interoperability standards, and is named on two United States patents.

The technology worked. The outcomes did not move. The Technology Was Never the Problem is his accounting of why, told from the inside by someone who signed off on the compromises.
He retired in 2019 and came back for this. He writes Inside the Loop at Substack and lives in Murrieta, California, with his wife Myra.
