Craig W. Stanfill doesn’t speculate about AI. He spent 40 years building it.

Craig spent decades at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence, co-inventing Memory-Based Reasoning, pioneering data science methods that now power today’s technology leaders, and co-founding a software company whose products quietly support the infrastructure of some of the world’s largest banks and corporations. He holds a PhD in AI from the University of Maryland and has been awarded more than 80 patents. He knows exactly how this technology works, which is precisely what makes his fiction so unsettling.

His Terms of Service series imagines a future ruled by corporations and their AI systems, a world that feels less like science fiction with every passing year. Kirkus Reviews calls it “a smashing, energetic installment that keeps getting better,” while Independent Book Review hails it as “a shining feat of literary sci-fi.”

Craig notes the irony that his own family has willingly stepped into the world he writes about. His wife, Sharon, is a software engineer, and their son, Colin, has followed in their footsteps, building a career in the technology industry. As Craig might say, they are living inside the very story he is telling.

When he is not writing or working in tech, Craig enjoys sailing, skiing, playing the guitar and lute, and traveling with Sharon, always searching for new places, new cultures, and new questions that fuel his fiction.
