Christopher Carlisle is an Episcopal priest whose rebellious take on his vocation inspired his first novels, "For Theirs is the Kingdom" and "Pickett’s Dream." Having briefly served in a parish, Carlisle went on to become a university chaplain before founding two outdoor street communities and a New England-wide initiative to address military veteran depression and suicide risk. A regular commentator on New England Public Radio, Carlisle earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, and graduate theological degrees from Harvard and Yale. As Episcopal chaplain at the University of Massachusetts, Carlisle created a highly innovative sanctuary incorporating scholarship, contemplative worship and the arts. Open to students, faculty and local residents, the center reimagined “faith” in the context of a diverse spectrum of academic disciplines: from biology and quantum physics, to poetry and music, to philosophy and technology, to working with the homeless on the streets of New York. Convicted that the church has failed the adventurous life of Jesus, he asserts that only by moving beyond institutional structures can Western culture hope to offer a life of lasting fulfillment. It was based on his hardscrabble experiences with people suffering poverty that Carlisle authored "For Theirs is the Kingdom," set in and around the Anglican cathedral in Montreal where his grandfather was a bishop. His second novel, "Pickett’s Dream," cinematically explores the relationship between love and romance, greed and competition, and hope and sacrifice, amid the beauty and wealth of the celebrated mansions of Newport, Rhode Island. He is quick to confess that his work is less likely to appeal to conventional Christians than to those in search of a renegade God in the freedom of the secular world. Married with four children, Carlisle lives in western Massachusetts. For more information about the author and his books, go to: christophercarlisle.com.
