Charlie Montgomery is a person who has had many careers in her working life. This was a long-term plan for her life back when it was common for people to work one job their whole careers. She determined one job would only teach one set of skills. She wanted more.

She started with zero skills except typing 100 words a minute. That was not useful toward a career. In her early twenties, she was unable to earn enough money to support herself and she ended up homeless for a year under a bridge in Denver, Colorado. After recovery from that, she worked three jobs and attended college classes in order to get ahead.

Ms. Montgomery began her career at 25 as a junior bookkeeper in the financial office of an apartment investment firm. Within six months, she had been promoted to Property Manager, with a specialty of taking depressed properties, remodeling the locations under a tight budget, and leasing out the project. She ended up managing 830 apartment units in thirteen locations across Denver.
