**Charles "Smittytrain" Smith** is a living testament to resilience, transformation, and the power of turning pain into purpose. Born into a legacy tied to his father’s nursing homes in Worcester, Massachusetts, his early life was shattered by profound loss and upheaval. At age three, unforeseen circumstances nearly left the family homeless until his grandfather stepped in to build a new home. Tragedy struck again at age five with his mother’s overdose death, followed by his father’s passing at age eleven in Van Horn, Texas—where young Charles held his hand in a final farewell. Orphaned and mute with grief for over six months, he was rescued by his uncle and relocated to Massachusetts, leaving behind his unlivable conditions and beloved dog, Max. Raised as the family “black sheep” by relatives who resented his father, he endured bullying, isolation, and childhood trauma that fueled years of anger, addiction to cocaine, alcohol, and marijuana. At 20, the U.S. Army became his turning point. Basic training at Fort Benning served as an intense detox, forging his inner strength. Stationed at Fort Carson, he drove a Bradley Fighting Vehicle and survived a turret explosion at the National Training Center, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. Deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for six months of riot control, he sharpened skills in high-pressure security and discipline before honorable discharge. Armed with degrees in Criminal Justice and Human Services, Charles (“Smittytrain”) worked nearly a decade as a Private Investigator and Security Consultant. In his 30s, the back-to-back cancer deaths of his uncle and grandfather triggered a devastating depression, self-harm, and a suicide attempt. Friends saved him, leading to VA Brockton Mental Health treatment and a period of homelessness in Boston. VA shelters opened his eyes—he was not alone. Diagnosed with PTSD rooted in his mother’s death (undiagnosed for decades), he embraced recovery. Today, he maintains over 30 years of sobriety while managing **Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder for 50 years** through martial arts (Shaolin Kempo Karate & Ninjutsu), meditation, exercise, mindfulness, and—most importantly—helping others. As a certified Peer Support Specialist, he supports veterans and civilians navigating trauma, addiction, and life’s battles. A proud author of the **Life Long Experience Series**, his books include *Operation: Enlighten*, *Operation: Awaken*, *Operation: Battle of a Lifetime*, *Operation: T.I.P.P.*, *The Power of a Happy Mind*, *10 Homes in 11 Years*, and *Operation: Safety in Motion*. Through motivational speaking, he has inspired thousands across 85+ countries as a resilient phoenix and lighthouse of hope. **Today, Charles “Smittytrain” Smith** leads with his new foundation philosophy: **Operation: K.A.T.A.** — a comprehensive framework built on **Knowledge, Awareness, Training, and Action**. This philosophy underpins all his work, empowering individuals (especially youth) to build situational awareness, overcome bullying and trauma, develop wellness & coping skills, and take decisive action toward safer, stronger, and more purposeful lives. A devoted father and family man, he cherishes the bonds that ground him and remains deeply proud of his country, honoring its values through service, storytelling, and the lifelong mission of turning personal crucible experiences into tools that light the way for others.
