Caroline Giles Banks, born in Boston, Massachusetts, was educated at Wellesley College, the University of New Mexico, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Chicago. Dr. Banks is a cultural anthropologist by training and profession and taught at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, among other colleges and universities. Her teaching and research interests include medical anthropology, psychological anthropology, cultural diversity, and the anthropology of poetics. Her academic research focuses on the cultural dimensions of anorexia nervosa and illness narratives. Caroline's poetry is often informed by her anthropological training and research. Reaching beyond academic prose, her poems, written in several genres, voice compassion for those whose lives are unsettled by displacement, discrimination and disillusionment. She is the author of "Warm Under the Cat: Haiku and Senryu Poems"; "The Clock Chimes: Haiku and Senryu Poems”; "The Clay Jar: Haiku, Senryu and Haibun Poems"; “Picture a Poem: Ekphrastic and Other Poems"; "The Weight of Whiteness: A Memoir in Poetry"; and "Pressing Matters: Haiku, Senryu and Haibun Poems". Her award-winning poems have been published in numerous literary and academic journals, magazines and anthologies. Caroline Giles Banks lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
