Carole Emberton was born in 1975 in Russellville, Kentucky. She received her B.A. from the University of Chicago (1997), an M.A. from Loyola University Chicago (1999) and Ph.D. from Northwestern University (2006). She is currently assistant professor of history at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), where she teaches classes on the Civil War & Reconstruction, southern history, and historical memory. Her first book, "Beyond Redemption," examines the role of violence in American political culture during the period of slave emancipation. Her work has appeared in the acclaimed New York Times "Disunion" series, History News Network, and the Journal of the Civil War Era. She is currently at work editing a collection of essays on the historical memory of Reconstruction.
