Carol Dine’s poems and personal narratives reflect her passion for visual art. She is the author of four books of poetry, NAMING THE SKY, TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE LUNAR ECLIPSE, VAN GOGH IN POEMS, and ORANGE NIGHT. Her awards include the American Cancer Society’s “Sword of Hope” Award for her journal, “Treatments,” published in the Boston Globe. She expanded the journal into a memoir, PLACES IN THE BONE in which Carol, as a survivor of metastatic breast cancer, explores the necessity of writing and art for both healing and survival itself. Carol has also received grants from the Saint Botolph Club Foundation, the Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, and the Francis Locke Award from Bitter Oleander Press. She has had the opportunity to connect with other artists and writers during residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Ragdale, the Wurlitzer Foundation, the Millay Colony, and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Given today's global chaos, Carol's passion for art extends into the arena of war art. Her poetry manuscript, "Resistance: The Canvas of War," is written in the voices of global women who endured war on many fronts, including artists whose work reflect social and political oppression. One poem, "Floating Lanterns," based on Toshi Maruki's image of lanterns, created to memorialize Hiroshima, received the Editor's Award from Ekphrasis, the journal in which it was published, and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Carol’s poems have appeared in several anthologies, including Liberation: New Works on Freedom, Poems Against War, Forgotten Women, and Wondering the Alphabet, and in such literary magazines as Bitter Oleander, Lilith, Salamander, Pangyrus, and Minerva Rising. Carol teaches writing and memoir at Massachusetts Art & Design, Boston. She is currently working on a new manuscript, “War Ghosts: Poems on Art.” Visit www.caroldine.com to learn more about Carol and her work.
