Hello Reader. Thank you for your interest in Parklife.

In 2020 I was leading a life. It was largely unsatisfactory, but I was trying to make the most of it. Everything changed, completely, when the first Covid lockdown was imposed. My date, who had come over from Manchester for wine, curry and Terror of the Zygons, was stranded in Liverpool, in a flat with a view of Sefton Park, with me. He’s been here ever since, changing my life.

I’d realised a life-long ambition by writing The Last Laugh in 2010-11. A novella, only fifty thousand words, but I liked my characters and was proud that I’d managed to come up with a coherent plot after a good two and half decades of trying. I showed it to my sisters and a few friends, who said it was pretty good, put it in a drawer and got on with producing government statistics, the work I was paid to do.

In late 2020 I showed my story to my resident date, who liked it. He wanted to know why I didn’t write some more. By the time Liverpool City Council put a massive fence around our park in 2021, my date had become my spouse, and we had been speculating about ancient civilisations, aliens and increasingly plausible global conspiracy theories for some time, over wine and Yahtzee of an evening. The fence was the catalyst. Amelia and Compton were back, with a new mystery to solve.

Me and my date: two people thrown together and kept together by strange circumstances finding inspiration in each other, the changing world and an unlikely combination of Beatles, Stones, John Stuart Mill, Douglas Adams, Graham Hancock, The Fourth Doctor, and Octopuses.

I’m currently finishing the fifth instalment in this four-part series.
