Heckman has been a published author for over eight years. Her first book, Charlie’s Secret: Inspired by a true story, follows a young girl though her abusive childhood. It is a fiction novel based off of Heckman's childhood, and although not a memoir, it was inspired by many of her memories and flashbacks. Writing was a part of her therapy to deal with debilitating anxiety, and although she admits that writing it was one of the hardest things she's ever done, publishing her story has connected her with many other victims of the same type of abuse, for which she is eternally grateful. Through the years, Heckman has continued writing and has now published several books, the most recent being the sequel to Charlie's Secret, titled Sam's Truth. It can be found exclusively on Amazon and is the continuation of her main character, Sam's, journey through life following the death of her mother. It showcases the many faces of abuse and how the PTSD from it can haunt victims their entire lives. She hopes that Sam's story of resilience and strength can inspire others to continue on even when they feel lost. In her spare time, Heckman takes care of her two young daughters on their family farm where they care for an array of animals. She recently opened her own business, and runs an equestrian facility where she specializes in horseback riding lessons for all ages and skill levels. This accomplishment stemmed from spending over 25 years in the horse industry and learning everything she could from trainers all over the US. Inspiring young children to follow their dreams is her main goals with her business, just as her teachers, coaches, and instructors had done for her. Heckman loves to binge-watch Netflix, is addicted to reality television shows, thinks sarcasm rules the world, and enjoys crocheting and doing puzzles in her spare time. Her favorite place in the world is on the back of one of her horses, cantering through the field and trail riding with her daughters. Heckman loves interacting with readers, and strongly encourages them to reach out to her via email, or Facebook with questions or comments about her books.
