Byron D. Brooks has charted a transformative path from overcoming homelessness to becoming a leading change agent in higher education. With roles at institutions such as Ferris State University, the University of Michigan, and Yale, Byron has leveraged his multidisciplinary expertise in the arts, business, social work, and higher education to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives. His work in academia emphasizes enriching student experiences through inclusive programming, mentorship, and the development of strategic DEIB frameworks. As the Chief Hood Officer at Hood Black & Educated Consulting Group, Byron advises institutions, nonprofits, and organizations on creating sustainable and equitable environments, informed by a blend of public policy and sociology. His grassroots, social justice, and community-based work spans the nation, earning him the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for his efforts in leading the National Day of Service Initiative for the Biden-Harris Administration. In recognition of his impact on social justice, Ferris State University created a social justice major in honor of his work. Byron is also a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
