Bruce Gatenby failed out of college his junior year. He spent a couple of weeks on the set of the original "Battlestar Galactica" worked retail, literally dug six-foot ditches, worked construction, wrote advertising, worked various Dickensian office drudge jobs, designed a robotic production facility, and finally wound up unemployed and living in his car before it was repossessed. He returned to college, received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Arizona, and taught at four universities across the U.S. In 1998, he walked away from academia and spent the next decade living, working, and writing in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
