Dr Brent W. Laartz, is a physician and author based in Davis Islands, Florida and St. John, USVI. He has penned two types of books, non-fiction medical education and fictional action thriller/adventure tales. Living on an island in Florida and in the islands of the Caribbean has had a profound effect on the author’s psyche. Sailing through those waters for the last two decades, he has set about weaving the stories he tells into books that conjure up the mysteries of the oceans and travel adventure. As a physician, his imagination is also drawn to medical thrillers. Naturally, the author’s passions in this life in paradise revolve around creating in all forms and the nourishment that the mountains and the open sea provide for his soul. Romance and adventure permeate the water, the sand, and the air, as he brings the locales to life to fuel his imagination.
Dr. Laartz has a medical practice in Safety Harbor, Florida and St. John, USVI with years of experience treating patients in hospitals and clinics around the world. He graduated with his BA and MS degrees from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and his MD degree in 1998 from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He finished his training in Tampa, Florida, where he completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in infectious diseases and tropical medicine at the University of South Florida. In addition, he founded a non-profit for medical missions and relief to India, the Caribbean, and other areas in need.
In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, mountain biking, sailing, and scuba diving. He loves to brew his own wines, beers, and fermented hot sauces. Traveling the globe, whether for business or pleasure, brings new adventures for another tale to tell. He places a great importance on family and his friends. He supports local charities and food markets and enjoys the arts such as opera and Broadway plays. Every chance he gets he plays soccer and baseball and travels the globe with his children. Originally from Iowa, he places a great importance on family and his friends. He is passionate about helping provide access to care for persons with chronic diseases like HIV and helping the public get access to preventive education information.
On the medical side, his practice has grown to five physicians and two nurse practitioners. Dr Laartz is on staff at eight local hospitals and runs two outpatient locations. He teaches frequently, holding a teaching appointment as Affiliate Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at the University of South Florida. Dr Laartz is faculty for two residency programs. He has served as infection control director and hospital epidemiologist for multiple hospitals. His state of the art clinic in travel medicine offers vaccines, preventive treatment, and counseling for travelers. Through his charity, Dr. Laartz has travelled around the world offering medical assistance wherever needed. He has participated in medical missions to India and has provided care to indigent patients in the Caribbean. For 2 years, while living in the Virgin Islands, he provided education to healthcare providers and indigent patients alike regarding widespread infections such as HIV and tuberculosis.
He is penning a book titled “Protect Yourself and Your Patients: Save a Life From Health Care Related Infections”, that is geared toward health professionals and how they can understand infection control. Look for it soon.
