Bonnie Zieman is a retired psychotherapist, educator, and author of multiple books that support emotional recovery from trauma, coercive environments, and identity loss. After earning a Master’s degree in education and training in both Gestalt therapy and Psychosynthesis, she worked in private practice for over twenty years, guiding individuals through their individual transformative healing journey.
Though deeply immersed in therapeutic work and academic study for many years, Bonnie eventually turned to writing as a way to reach a broader audience. She felt a growing need to speak to those suffering in silence—people facing depression, anxiety, shunning, and disorientation after leaving rigid belief systems or emotionally controlling relationships. One such system was her own former religious community, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, which she quietly left after thirty years of membership. Her lived experience, paired with clinical expertise, gave her a unique voice in the recovery space.
Bonnie is the author of several acclaimed recovery-focused titles for those healing from high-control groups and other forms of psychological wounding, including:
Exiting the JW Cult: A Healing Handbook;
The Challenge to Heal – After Leaving a High-Control Group;
The Challenge to Heal Workbook & Journal;
Fading Out of the JW Cult: A Memoir;
Reboot: After Recovery from Trauma;
Cracking the Cult Code: What Cult Survivors Want Their Therapist to Know;
Shunned: A Survival Guide; and
Nobody’s Thrall, a novel;
Danny & Becca's Upside-Down Life: A Novel;
Danny & Becca's Upside-Down Life Companion Story Coloring Book; and
Rewire Your Brain to Refresh Your Life Workbook.
In 2024–2025, Bonnie expanded into children’s literature with two books:
Danny & Becca’s Upside-Down Life, a middle-grade, illustrated novel about two siblings adjusting after their family leaves a restrictive religion, and Danny & Becca’s Upside-Down Life: A Companion Story Coloring Book accompanies the story, offering expressive tools to help children process change, grief, and emotional growth.
She also writes under the pseudonym MacKenzie Ames, creator of the elegant “Quotes, Notes & Coloring Pages” series for adults. These guided journals blend inspirational quotations, expressive journaling space, and mindful coloring pages around themes such as self-worth, anxiety, grief, personal transformation, emotional self-care, and more.
Bonnie writes to help others break free from limiting beliefs, reconnect with their authentic selves, and navigate emotional upheavals with resilience and clarity—whether they’re recovering from childhood conditioning, religious trauma, or simply trying to find their way back to themselves.
