Bethany serves as president of the CURESZ Foundation (Comprehensive Understanding via Research and Education into SchiZophrenia) which she founded jointly with Henry Nasrallah, MD, in 2016. Dr. Nasrallah serves as a Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology and Neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees includes psychiatrists, lawyers, a counselor and three mental health advocates, all from around the country. The CURESZ Foundation offers individuals, their families and the clinicians who serve them information about the most cutting edge and underutilized treatments for schizophrenia. This includes information about the underutilized medication clozapine which has kept Bethany in remission from schizophrenia for over fifteen years, with no relapse. Over the years, Bethany has been told many times that her full recovery from schizophrenia is the “exception to the rule.” In an effort to prove that recovery is possible, the CURESZ Foundation highlights stories of individuals with schizophrenia who are thriving despite their diagnosis. We call these remarkable individuals “Schizophrenia Survivors.” Recently, Bethany and Henry Nasrallah, MD published Awakenings, featuring 28 stories of schizophrenia recovery, essays and resources. CURESZ spreads the word that schizophrenia is a treatable disease of the brain. It should be classified with other brain diseases including Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and stroke. It should also be classified with other physical illnesses including arthritis, cancer and diabetes. Bethany also maintains a blog called Recovery Road on Psychology Today. She published her memoir, Mind Estranged, nine years ago (July 2014). Her mother, Karen S Yeiser also published a memoir called Flight form Reason: A Mother's Story of Schizophrenia, Recovery and Hope in 2014. The two are companion books. Since publishing Mind Estranged, Bethany has shared her story for universities, events and meetings throughout the country. In her free time, Bethany plays the violin and viola, swims, practices Mandarin Chinese and studies ancient Hebrew.
