Ben's latest novel, The Kicker, was published by Broken Tribe Press. His first three books – Retina Boy (novel), Jerry’s Vegan Women (short stories), and The Vegan Monologues (essays) – were all published by Loyola University (Maryland). His essays and commentaries have been carried by The Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, Chicago Tribune, NPR, and a variety of other publications. His poetry has been published by Broken Tribe Press, Wax Poetry and Art, and other journals.

Ben has been communicating science and research in the inherited retinal disease community for more than two decades. As an advisor to Hope in Focus, he writes articles on research, develops educational resources, and hosts the Hope in Focus podcast. Ben also enjoys working with patients and families to help them understand their retinal disease and the research underway that may benefit them. Previously, he was VP of science communications at the Foundation Fighting Blindness. In 2026, he launched his science communications and patient advocacy consulting business.
