Formed by the long shadow of the Oklahoma Dust Bowl, Ben Johnson ran far away, but those pumpjacks and red dirt will always be his homeland. He started as an outsider – A fat kid in a skinny world, a free thinker in an evangelical theocracy, a union boss and then a persuader – and he kept himself an outsider, whether he liked it or not. He ran so far that now he’s snuck up on himself from behind. Ben studied philosophy and classics at Boston University, got a Master's degree and worked as a college librarian. He threw himself into organized labor for about a decade and became the President of the Vermont AFL-CIO, the youngest person ever elected to such a position at the time. After a decade or so of that, he stepped down and started working as a labor consultant, the fella called a 'unionbuster'. That's about the time he dusted off his trusty text editor and began writing. He didn't know it at the time, but he was setting off on the journey of a lifetime, to learn and become who he is.
