From solving equations to choreographing dance routines, Barbara Bernstein’s career has been a joyful fusion of art and science. After earning her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland’s School of Education, she began her career as a mathematics instructor at Bowie State University and later helped run a family business that published annual editions of "The Tax Guide for College Teachers." Yet Barbara’s lifelong passion for music and movement eventually led her to follow a different rhythm. For more than twenty years, she has been a full-time Latin dance instructor and the founder of DanceInTime, a company that teaches and performs Salsa and Rueda de Casino. Transitioning from mathematics to dance may seem like a leap, but Barbara has found these disciplines surprisingly similar. Both demand practice, persistence, and the confidence to make mistakes on the path to mastery. Barbara’s teams have performed at an array of venues from DC's Kennedy Center and Capital One Arena to local community festivals, and have been featured on Channel 7 ABC News, DC Channel 5 Morning News, Telemundo, and "Good Morning Washington". She has choreographed and taught “Dancing with the Stars”-style competition routines, led Salsa Bootcamps, and taught workshops in cities including DC, New York, Miami, San Juan, and Dublin. In addition to her performance work, Barbara has taught credit dance classes at American University, George Washington University, University of Maryland, George Mason University, and Prince George’s Community College. Barb prides herself on running fun, productive classes and workshops where laughter and dance go hand in hand. During the pandemic, Barbara tutored at Friends Community School in Maryland. She has also privately tutored struggling math students over the years and continues to see parallels between math and dance. Barbara authored "Salsa Dancing & Rueda de Casino Guidebook for Beginner to Advanced Dancers" (2024)—a "genre blender” of guidebook, memoir, and coffee-table book. She also co-authored "Lunar Cars & Magic Words" (2025), a whimsical children’s adventure with a mathematical twist inspired by bedtime stories her husband once told their children. Together, her work in education, dance, and storytelling reflects a lifelong commitment to learning, creativity, and connection—whether through numbers, movement, or imagination.
