By the time he was a teenager at the latest, Axel Ulrich already knew that he wanted to write a book one day, though he also wanted to become a veterinarian. He had completed an internship at a veterinary clinic but didn’t have the required high school diploma, so he studied economics—which, by his own admission, sounds rather boring. He put off writing the book until “someday” and decided, on the side, not to spend his whole life doing the same thing.

He stuck to that resolution thoroughly. He worked as a business journalist at a news agency for three years, then looked at his colleagues who’d been there for ten years already and left. He got fed up with the PR industry after only a short time. Next came an American consulting firm, and in the ’80s, the first personal computers, which led to him starting his own IT systems company.

By the early ’90s, he had nearly 25 employees, but then the price slump nearly brought him down. He drastically downsized the company and turned things around. And so, “someday” had finally arrived. His first novel found a publisher, but the publisher soon went bankrupt. Not because of the novel, says the author.

Since then, he’s been writing thrillers about money laundering, illicit funds, and blackmail—without a detective standing next to the body. He didn’t have to invent one character; he’d dreamed about him: Herbert, an alien sent to help Earth who meddles in everything. That’s how three sci-fi comedies came to be. The name Douglas Adams comes up in the reviews.

Axel Ulrich lives in Switzerland. He didn’t end up becoming a veterinarian. Instead, he’s now taking care of an alien who can’t ride a bike.
