Le metamorfosi o L'asino d'oro (Asinus aureus), è un'opera di Lucio Apuleio, del II secolo d. CE' l'unico romanzo antico latino pervenuto interamente ad oggi. Nel 158 l'autore fu processato per magia,e nel suo discorso difensivo egli non citò quest'opera , che pure tratta di magia, di qui si deduce che l'opera sia successiva a quella data. Il libro è costituito da un soggetto principale, Lucio, e della sua metamorfosi in un asino a seguito di un esperimento non andato a buon fine.

Apuleius (125 - ca. 180 n. Chr.) studierte Philosophie in Athen und gehörte der von Platon gegründeten Akademie an. "Amor und Psyche" ist eine Erzählung, die in den einzigen vollständig erhaltenen Roman der Antike "Der goldene Esel" eingebettet ist. Diese märchenhafte Geschichte von Liebe, zerstörerischer Neugier und schließlich glücklichem Ende hat bis heute nichts von ihrem Zauber eingebüßt. Ein Top-Titel, unangefochten und unerreichbar an erster Stelle auf der 2000 Jahre alten Bestsellerliste.

Bei Apuleius zielt sein Werben indirekt auf die eigene Gestalt, ein göttlicher Gesell hat sich die Königstochter ausgeguckt.

Sie ruft ihren Sohn Amor und befiehlt ihm, Psyche dazu zu bringen, sich in einen schlechten Mann zu verlieben. Dieser hat sich allerdings selbst in die Schönheit verliebt und lässt Psyche in ein märchenhaftes Schloss bringen.
