Anthony Brandt returned to poetry after a hiatus of several decades, even though his early poems met recognition in the Times Literary Supplement, (TLS), Prairie Schooner, New York Quarterly, and Boulevard. In the decades between, he wrote for numerous national magazines, such as The Atlantic, American Heritage, Psychology Today, Connoisseur, GQ, and National Geographic Adventure. Best known as an essayist, his Ethics column in Esquire was the best read regular feature in the magazine. He was the essays editor for the Pushcart Prize for nearly two decades. He is also the author of Reality Police, a muckraking look at the mental health system; The People Along the Sand, a collection of essay, poetry and fiction; and The Man Who Ate His Boots, The Tragic History of the Search for the Northwest Passage. He is the editor of a series of reissued adventure classics for National Geographic, the most popular of which is a new abridgment of The Journals of Lewis & Clark. Another is a book particularly dear to his historian heart, Thomas Jefferson Travels, a selection of Jefferson's writings while he was U.S. minister to France. The Only Available Word is his second book of poetry.
