ANGIE BOWIE Angie Bowie is a writer and entertainer. She is also a ‘style icon, singer, song-writer and producer.’ Angie is well-read, informed, independent and self-sufficient. Her cosmopolitan perspective was ensured by her birth place, the island of Cyprus, Jewel of the Mediterranean. Angie’s father Colonel George M. Barnett was a mining engineer at a copper-mine run by Cypress Mining Corp. Mary Angela attended St George’s School in Switzerland, she graduated in 1966, went on to Connecticut College for Women and then back to England in 1967 to study at Kingston Polytechnic. Angie’s lesbian affair at Connecticut College for Women established her fight and focus on LBGT equality. In between acting in plays, studies and school politics - the sit-in at LSE and various friends; Angie had a busy schedule, “I was working with Calvin Mark Lee, head of A&R for Mercury Records London to get a job with that company when I finished at Kingston Poly studying Marketing and Business Studies. Calvin wanted to sign David Bowie, so I closed the deal with Mercury Records. There was much opposition from the European head of Mercury Records talented producer, Lou Reizner. I triumphed with the help of Irwin Green, the president of Mercury." Angie and David began to build the legend and were married in March 1970, had a son who is now film director Duncan Jones. They cranked up the machinery of fame and acceptance. In 10 years, Angie and David Bowie completed 11 albums and when they split up, David was successful and powerful enough to command a 20 million dollar advance from EMI. and much more as he toured the world. Angie contributed to David Bowie’s kaleidoscope of stage personas, including : David Bowie Man of Words, Man of Music, The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Pin-Ups, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Young Americans, Low, Lodger and Heroes. The first eight albums were recorded in five years and “That was the time when we were most effective for each other.” Angie has often been referred to as the power behind Bowie’s meteoric success. The cultural impact of David and Angie Bowie in the 1970s and beyond, cannot be over-estimated. Following the divorce in 1980, Angie had her second child, daughter Stacia, with the punk musician Drew Blood. She settled in America, concentrated on bringing up Stacia, and writing. While in Atlanta she met Michael Gassett. They reside in Tucson. Angie has authored seven books: ‘Free Spirit,’ ‘Bisexuality: A Pocket Guide,’ ‘Backstage Passes,’ (Angie has written evocatively about that heady time in the 1970s in her books ‘Free Spirit’ and ‘Backstage Passes: Life on the Wild Side with David Bowie, (The book is rumored to be the inspiration behind the film ‘Velvet Goldmine.’) ‘Cat’Astrophe,’ (illustrated by Rick Hunt), ‘Lipstick Legends,’ ‘Fancy Footwork,’ (a book of Angie’s poetry and lyrics illustrated by Rick Hunt) and ‘POP.SEX,’ (Angie’s historical opus of Sexuality throughout time and places).
