André J de Saint Phalle was born in 1952 into French nobility tracing to 1240. His grandfather transformed that heritage into Wall Street banking, one degree from the Kennedy presidency. But in 1973—disinherited, an ivy league dropout who refused his father's directives—the 21-year-old stuck out his thumb and hitchhiked 7,000 miles across America. At 30, he built Windsurfing Antigua with Thea Ramsey, who fought the cystic fibrosis that took her life at 37. Decades of wandering followed—always moving, never staying. In 2002, he married Veronica, an artist whose quiet commitment to place would take him twenty years to understand. Then in 2019, seven seizures forced stillness. At 73, André recognized what Veronica had demonstrated all along: paradise isn't a place you find but a commitment to staying. He writes from an iPad Pro on a swinging air desk over his La-Z-Boy in Johnson, Vermont, dogs at his feet, Veronica painting nearby. His memoir trilogy *The Spaces Between* documents the cost of perpetual motion and the wisdom of learning—at last—to stop running.
