Cuban-American Anaïs Nin (1903-1977) is best known for the eight published volumes of her Diaries, spanning six decades of her lifetime and exploring themes of female identity, sexuality, and self-discovery in a manner that seems ground-breaking even today. Born in France, she spent her childhood in Barcelona and New York. After her 1924 marriage, to banker Hugh Guiler, they moved to Paris until the outbreak of the Second World War. They returned to the USA, where Nin divided the rest of her life between New York and Los Angeles. Her writing is deeply autobiographical, as she found inspiration in her study of psychoanalysis and her personal connections to cultural figures of the 20th century like Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell, Gore Vidal, Antonin Artaud, Kenneth Anger, Jean Varda, Gloria Vanderbilt, Otto Rank, John Steinbeck and many more. Her literary work includes novels A Spy In The House of Love, Winter of Artifice, The Four-Chambered Heart and Collages and short story collections including posthumously published erotica Little Birds, Delta of Venus and Auletris. Her unapologetic pursuit of personal and artistic freedom, honed over a lifetime rich with emotional and intellectual experiences, offers modern readers a powerful model for understanding their own identities, emotions, and creative impulses. –The Anaïs Nin Foundation
