A. M. Slaugh was born in Vernal, Utah. She graduated from Uintah High School and Snow College. She majored in communications at Southern New Hampshire University but did not complete her degree because the work was causing her too much eye strain and she kept getting horrible migraines from it.
A. M. Slaugh was born with a very rare syndrome called Bardet Biedl. One symptom of this syndrome is and eye condition that has gradually caused her to go blind. A. M. Slaugh sees colors but she can tell they are not the same colors they used to be and she has a hard time distinguishing between shades that are similar in color. The better the contrast and lighting, the easier she can see things. A. M. Slaugh can still see shapes but cannot see small details, such as facial features or normal print. She has never been abel to see in the dark.
A. M. Slaugh has loved reading ever since she was very young. She started with normal print, then went to larger and larger print until she could no longer make out the words. Then she had to listen to books instead of reading them. A. M. Slaugh can read braille but she usually prefers audiobooks. She enjoys most genres and has always loved writing or editing.
A. M. Slaugh wrote several silly short stories during the first part of her life but never saved them. The first major undertaking in writing that she did was helping her brother edit his book. One night after finishing this project, A. M. Slaugh was extremely bored. So she decided to open a document on her computer and start typing. Because bright lights hurt her eyes, A. M. Slaugh was sitting in the dark, except for the glow of her monitor. So she began writing about darkness. She continued writing whatever came to her mind and she soon had a few chapters.
A. M. Slaugh was intrigued with the story she had started, so kept on writing it. Once she had about thirteen chapters, she realized her story was turning into a book and decided she had better come up with a story line so her book could have some structure to it, instead of just writing whatever came to mind. It was then that A.M. Slaugh planned out the basics of her story and decided to call it Darkness Comes. Little did she know that a few chapters written as a means of entertainment would turn into a trilogy, which she called Saren Trilogy.
While writing Darkness Ebbs, A. M. Slaugh encountered writer’s block. So she took a break from the trilogy and wrote a short story she called Sandcastle Memories. When A. M. Slaugh was nearly done with this story, her writer’s block went away. But she wanted to finish the story before going back to her trilogy. A. M. Slaugh also loves cooking and has collected a lot of recipes during her life. So she decided to combine her favorites into a cookbook, called Our Favorite Recipes.
Darkness Comes and Darkness Deepens are on Audible and Arden Black is working on Darkness Ebbs. . A. M. Slaugh has been revising a series her brother R. J. Slaugh wrote before he passed away in 2016. He too was born with the same syndrome as A. M. Slaugh but his eyesight deteriorated at a much faster rate. By the time he was thirteen, he had only one percent of vision left in one eye.
RJ Slaugh had an incredible imagination, which enabled him to write the Dragon Knights Series. But because he went blind at such a young age, there were certain rules of writing and sentence structuring that were very difficult for him to understand. Because of this, his story was not easy to read. Not long before R. J. Slaugh died, he gave A. M. Slaugh permission to edit his books. AT that point, they discussed the story line and characters in great detail.
Editing RJ Slaugh’s story has been a much bigger project than A. M. Slaugh expected and there is still a lot of work left to do. To prevent experiencing writers block again, she took a few breaks away from the story. She wrote and published The Haunted Cottage. She made a couple more cookbooks and revised the original one. A.M. Slaugh is currently writing Magic in the Water and then will go back to working on her brother’s series.
