About this listen
Twenty years ago, monsters rose on earth and began a new age of civilization.
One where humans live in military-controlled, cramped and dirty cities along the coasts, and the majority of the United States is known as the Wastes. A lawless, desolate and dangerous place, teeming with monsters that have claimed the land for their own.
Including Wyn the Soul Eater.
He appears every three years, making his way across the country and slaughtering humans randomly, sucking them dry until they’re nothing but husks.
I’ve only been in the military for six months, but now I’m part of a unit tasked with trying to stop and capture him. And when I’m the only soldier out of hundreds that the Soul Eater leaves alive, I realise that something about me has intrigued him.
But what is it? What could a twenty-three-year-old guy from the south, with no one and nothing in the world, have possibly done to capture the attention of a death monster with horns, blackened fingertips and a face hidden in the dark depths of his hood?
Soul Eater is book one of Monstrous, a post-apocalyptic fantasy series featuring monsters and human men falling in love. It is a m/m love story and contains sexually explicit content and graphic depictions of torture and violence.

Michael Lesley does a fantastic job of conveying Wyn’s unsettling voice, highly recommend wearing headphones for this one.

Michael Lesley's performance is great he does a great job of all the voices. I particularly like Wyn - he sounds a bit like Agent Smith from the Matrix..

fantastic story

It DID feel like the voice actor was uncomfortable with the smutty descriptions and dialogue, but seemed to become more comfortable and read with a more natural feel as the book went on.
Overall I loved the audiobook almost as much as the eBook, and will definitely be both listening again and getting Edin (book 2) when it's released. From the sample of Edin at the end of the book, it seems like the narrator is much more comfortable with the dialogue there, so I can't wait for the next release in a few weeks.
Brilliant story & surprisingly good voice acting

There is so much going on with the characters and the world, and yet you never loose track of what's going on or become overwhelmed with the enormity of the world because the focus is only on what is happing to these characters right now. The author doesn't get bogged down in detail, but has found the right balance to make the world real and relevant. They accomplish just the right combination of action, paranormal, mystery, romance, and sex to make this just fantastic.
Now I would definitely say this receives 5* for the performance but unfortunately only 2* for the production. I was initially thrown by the voice given to the main characters but that is more because I've read it on Kindle at least twice before and had developed an internal voice for the characters myself. That said, the performance was brilliantly done and the narrator definitely has the flexibility needed for this series going forward.
The production and editing needs some quality control though. In the last 3rd there were quite a few times when lines were repeated, they had a line performed in the voice of a character that was not actually the character speaking, and there were a few pauses that were either way too long or not nearly long enough. I seriously hope they fix this oversight for the next books.
Worth the wait!
