Publisher's Summary

Aza Ray is drowning in thin air.

Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speak - to live.

All the doctors can do is give her drugs and hope they keep her alive. So when Aza catches a glimpse of a ship in the sky, her family chalks it up to a cruel side effect of the medication. But Aza doesn't think this is a hallucination. She can hear someone on the ship calling her name.

Only her best friend, Jason, listens. Jason, who's always been there. Jason, for whom she might have more-than-friendly feelings. But before Aza can consider that thrilling idea, something goes terribly wrong. The sickness catches up with her.

Aza is lost to our world.

And found, by another.

Magonia.

Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In Magonia, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense power. And she can use it to change the world.

As she navigates her new life, Aza discovers that war is coming. Magonia and Earth are on the cusp of a reckoning. In Aza's hands lies the whole of humanity - including the boy who loves her. Where do her loyalties lie?

Maria Dahvana Headley's soaring YA debut is a fiercely intelligent, multilayered fantasy rich with symbolism and steeped in allegory. Aza's journey pulls her deep into the questions of home, of love, of self, and of just what it means to find them all.

"I wish there were more stars to give!"

An absolutely spellbinding narrative. Once I started listening I could not turn it off, the story took me under two days to finish 😳😁
Unbelievably heartfelt acting. The narrators had me in tears so many times, I cannot rave more highly about their performances.
This is my new favourite book. I am over the moon. The world created and the characters who lived in it - just amazing.

    "Hooked from the beginning!"

The narrators are awesome and the story is amazing! I went into this book, not sure what to expect because the summary sounded good. I was never bored and such a good read. Probably a new favorite book as well. If you're looking for something that isn't your usual type of book, go for it. The narrators totally make the book. I'm now off to recommend this to everyone I know!

    "Something Utterly Magical"
What made the experience of listening to Magonia the most enjoyable?

The narrators. Therese and Michael delivered an utterly BEAUTIFUL performance, which made this fantastical story so much more vibrant and real. Their inflections and acting really made you understand the character - they brought real life to the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Magonia?

All of the Jason chapters, and the entire final arc of the story.

Have you listened to any of Therese Plummer and Michael Crouch ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I will certainly be looking into more books narrated by them.

    "Who is the audience????"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I must have unknowingly been shopping in the juvenile section. I can't imagine this book appealing to anyone over 14.

Would you ever listen to anything by Maria Dahvana Headley again?

If it were written for adults.

What three words best describe Therese Plummer and Michael Crouch ’s voice?

The narration was good for the voice of a young girl but I don't enjoy listening to teenagers in real life and certainly don't want to listen to them in my car.

    "Too much teenage drama"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The plot is creative and the ending leaves room for more development of this interesting world. However, I was left with more questions than answers about the relationship between Magonia and earth, and also about Aza's relationship to both. It just seemed so far away from me, and too different to grasp.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Therese Plummer and Michael Crouch ?

Michael did a great job; but as for Therese, there are times I just wanted her to stop! She made every character sound like a ball of uncontrolled emotion. I understand that the characters were thrown into some pretty challenging situations, but I don't understand why they always sounded like they were barely holding it together. Aza's character was the worst, but I quickly realized that this was Therese's performance style when all other characters she represented exuded the same thing.

Do you think Magonia needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes and no. Yes because the world was so underdeveloped. She spent more time on the character development and the visual -- which was great -- but that doesn't help me connect to the world at a deeper level like I would have preferred, especially one so different as Magonia. No because I don't want to read another teenage drama at this level. If there could please be a little more depth beyond the barely pubescent teenage emotional state in the characters, I could enjoy it a little more.

    Any additional comments?

Overall, I don't think I would read a sequel to this book. It was just like I put in my headline -- too much teenage drama. I don't think I can listen to one more recital of the number pi from the main male character, or one more iteration of ((()) ))(( {}{{{{}} symbols to represent words because of angsty, emotional, communication issues.

    Without any form of spoilers:
This story came to life through the exquisite performance of ms Plummer! There are actors on screen that convey less emotion.
Wonderful and a lovely story as well!

The Author did an excellent job of describing in detail is beautiful magical world . I also like the fact that they had a female narrator for the girl and a male narrator for the boy.

Narration was great. Voices were clear and pleasant. However, the story was just ok. Teenage love story , scifi style . I finished the book . Left off like another story to come ?

    Story
"Top contender for best YA fantasy of the year."

The one-line synopsis of this book would probably be pretty trite, e.g. "Young adult, after first endangering the world, finds her place in it, and in doing so saves us all." But the characters are far more compelling than this plot line leads one to expect. There are also two very different settings--a mundane human one, and a fantastic one--both meticulously drawn and each, in its way, entirely credible. Great narration by both Plummer and Crouch.

    Story
"Simply one of the coolest books of 2015 for me"
If you could sum up Magonia in three words, what would they be?

Orginal works, creative retelling of an old tale of forbidden love. This is the type of fantasy book that can consume great quantities. Take me places I unexpectedly end up.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Both the boy and the girl, seemed they were both defective in a way and yet perfect.

Which character – as performed by Therese Plummer and Michael Crouch – was your favorite?

    The same

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes
