Publisher's Summary

“I’m doing something here that I’ve never done before, presenting the lengthy, raw interviews of my work. In the fall of 2019 through August 2020, I interviewed President Trump 19 times for my second book on his presidency, Rage. I had also interviewed him in 2016 when he was a presidential candidate. I decided to take this unusual step of releasing these recordings after relistening in full to all 20 interviews. As I listened to them again I was stunned by their relevance to understanding Trump. Hearing Trump speak is a completely different experience to reading the transcripts or listening to snatches of interviews on television or the internet.” Bob Woodward from The Trump Tapes

The Trump Tapes is the intimate and astonishing audio archive of Bob Woodward’s 20 interviews with Donald Trump.

Featuring more than eight hours of Woodward/Trump conversations, The Trump Tapes is as historically important as the Frost/Nixon interviews. In this up-close, unvarnished self-portrait of Trump and his presidency, listeners will hear Trump as Woodward did: profane, incautious, divisive, and deceptive, but also engaging and entertaining, ever the host and the salesman, trying to sell his presidency to win Woodward over.

Relying on familiar devices – airing grievances, stoking divisions, repeating himself to a staggering degree, as if saying something often and loud enough will make something true – Trump uses his voice as a concussive instrument, pounding in the listener’s ear.

In new commentary created exclusively for The Trump Tapes, Woodward at times breaks frame from the interviews to provide essential context or clarification. But for the most part the interviews proceed uninterrupted, fulfilling Woodward’s goal of presenting Trump’s voice and words for the historical record, and offering listeners the chance to hear and judge and make their own assessments.

As relevant as ever to the task of understanding Donald Trump, The Trump Tapes reveal Trump in his own words – a man consumed by the past and clinging to his grievances, unable to understand his responsibilities as president or address the crises affecting the country.

This was enthralling!

To hear Trump, in his own words was both riveting and terrifying. I had never thought we would see another Hitler in history, but here we are. Well done Bob Woodward!

Excellence in Journalism

Subject matter aside, which in itself is extremely interesting, I very much enjoyed the insight into Bob Woodward's process and skill. Would recommend for journos who are anxious about combative or high profile interviews.

This is not just a story of American political leadership. It is the story of the lives of two men and their interactions; one utilising his wisdom, crafting his words, while the other attempts illegal moves of his chess pieces across the Scrabble board. Seriously though, intriguing on a number of levels, and with more of a narrative than you'd expect.

A window into Trumps mind

What an interesting and at times alarming view into what Trump focuses on and his view of himself. A powerful and engaging offering from Woodward.

Astounding listening

Listening to these tapes confirmed everything I’ve ever felt about Trump, who totally exposed himself, through sheer hubris to be a foolish and disgraceful person. Dunning Kruger in action. So interesting to hear these tapes.

So boring listening to a man child going on and on

6 hours to go, it's boring listening to trump just going on and on and on, it really shows he should never have been president "f..kin moron" was being very polite.
Bob Woodwards interjecting was the books only relief.
Finished it now, It really shows what Trump is in his own words a two bit carpet bagger, nothing more.
Bob Woodward has the patience of a saint listen to trump.

How the people elected a Moron

I found it hard to listen to someone so consumed with his own ego, wandering around in circles like a diseased whelerbeest and to think he was President just makes me feel ill.

Fascinating.

Worthwhile actually hearing the interviews themselves which show how deeply unsuitably Trump was to hold the top position at a time of national disaster. You can hear the panic in his own words; the uncertainty; and dare I say it the fundamentally narcissistic nature of his personality in the tone of his conversation (rants) with Woodward, all in his own words. History will be his judge.
