Kindle Storyteller Award winner 2021

Meet DCI Lesley Clarke. She’s a straight-talking city copper who doesn’t suffer fools gladly…and she’s been transferred to rural Dorset.

After being injured in a bomb attack, Lesley is presented with a choice - early retirement, or a period of respite in a calmer location.

But things don’t stay calm for long.

Before she’s even started her new job, Lesley is dragged into investigating a murder at one of England’s most iconic landmarks, the imposing Corfe Castle.

Lesley must hit the ground running. Can she get along with her new partner, DS Dennis Frampton, a traditionalist who doesn’t appreciate her style? How will she navigate the politics of a smaller force where she’s a bigger, and less welcome, fish? And most importantly, can she solve the murder before the killer strikes again?

The Corfe Castle Murders is a compelling, character-driven mystery perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves, LJ Ross, and Elly Griffiths.

Follow the money

This was a good murder mystery. Two murders, two suspects and a few more complications thrown in as a bonus. I like the characters. The are complex and show great potential for future stories.
The narration is easy to listen to and the individual characters were easy to visualise.

Good story, irritating narration

Yet another potentially engaging story ruined by the narrator.

Very arbitrary interpretation of tone saw wistful, reflective, sing song delivery interspersed with crass or screechy injections of ‘expression’.

I wonder how some of these narrators get the gig!

Good read

Fast moving, always interesting, good characters and maybe most importantly, a great narrator who pulled it all together

Really enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book! Intricate and with a good pace, good action and contempory.

Holds one's interest

I did like the mystery, the variation in characters and that the author does not blur the detective's life with the murder story. Also, I like a story that proceeds chronically. I don't like it when the author tries to keep the reader in suspense by withholding information. (like at the end when she uses "suspect" rather than the name. ) Create suspense with suspenseful action! Finally the reader: Well, she does annunciation clearly. But her sing-song voice is like the reading of a children's book. And she misses the well-written emphasis on so many phrases, wasting the skills of the author.

Just missed the mark!

A chapter every few words, so irritating, as was the often staccato delivery. I did manage to finish it though, so four stars.

aggressive characters!

I didn't find much to like in any of the characters. Almost all seem to have an axe to grind or issues and I found the tone generally aggressive. I understand the author wants to set up a scenario for an ongoing team but I don't think I like them enough to revisit. From an audio viewpoint the number of different accents was distracting,

Can’t

Can’t listen to another book with this narrator. The story was okay but the way it is read just ruined it for me. The emphasis in the sentences and in the voices was all in the wrong places to my thinking, and the tone too “sing-song” for an adult book. Perhaps the style is more suited to children’s literature. I did manage to finish this book, because I was interested to hear the story ending, but I found it difficult to focus on it and it was a little too torturous for me to try the next in this series. My apologies, Jan. I love your writing though, Rachel.
