Publisher's Summary

You can’t stay dead forever....

A group of high school students gather on the Isle of Skye’s remote Coral Beach for a hedonistic night of dancing, drugs, and alcohol to celebrate the passing of their finals. The new millennium is on the horizon and the future beckons, promising new hope and a fresh wind of optimism. In the coming days, many will leave the island for work or to study on the mainland, whereas others will remain on Skye and forge a more traditional path, much as their families have done for centuries before them. That is...all but one....

D.I. Duncan McAdam is dispatched home to the Misty Isle. A body has been found buried in a remote location on the Waternish peninsula. Well-preserved in the peat, Isla Matheson—missing for the better part of two decades—is revealed to a shocked island community. A teenage runaway is dead...and no one is talking.

Joining a small team of detectives, Duncan is tasked with revisiting those who knew Isla, those who cared for her...and those with the potential to kill her. In a remote community well-used to settling scores among themselves, will they trust one of their own when he asks questions or will they persevere with the façade of ignorance?

As he uncovers the island’s long-held secrets, Duncan must face his own demons. Old wounds he thought long healed have opened and this time, he cannot hide from them, he cannot run, and he won’t like the answers he is given. Skye is a place of mystery with a landscape of rugged beauty, but one that Duncan feels should exist only in his memories...or perhaps his worst nightmares.

A Long Time Dead is the first in a new series of crime thrillers from the multi-million best-selling crime writer, J M Dalgliesh, the author of the Hidden Norfolk and Dark Yorkshire books.

Great story

I liked this book it shows the importance of belonging and needing your own kind of people.

Really great listen!

I've been meaning to read/listen to Dagliesh for awhile as he was recommended to me by the JD Kirk readers group and this didn't disappoint! I ended up messaging JM when I guessed something and he was kind enough to write back, Angus King once again slayed the performance (I specifically go looking for books that he narrates) and I'm looking forward to spending some more time on the Isle of Skye with these characters:)

Good story but hard to follow

Good story but many of the names are very, VERY similar and it's easy to get lost as to who is talking and who is being spoken about. I found I had to go back a few times to try and figure it out. It's a good story if you can follow it.

So many twists and turns

Fabulous book. I love the author’s turn of phrase. The book takes meandering thru all the grand theories, only to have them not come to fruition. Step by step leading you to the ending which is so out of left field. Loved it. Loved the narrator too. Looking forward to the next book

Kept me theorising

At times conversations did not finish. He took Rory home, in the midst of a serious discussion and dropped it.

Great first story 😃

As a huge fan of JD Kirk and Angus King, I was really happy to come across this book! Had to smile at the sound of "Sinead" and "Tyler" just to mention a couple of JD's characters...oh and of course "Moira"! 😂 I did guess the nickname of Duncan's new colleague straight away, only because I remembered a joke with that name in there...but won't give it away 😎great first book with such descriptive words of a place I've certainly never been to, being Australian🇦🇺 now onto the next one! 😊
