Publisher's Summary

Nick – so persuasive, ever the optimist, still boyishly handsome. Always on a quest to design the perfect environment, convinced it could heal a wounded soul.

The conversion was Nick's idea, but it's Zoe who's here now, in a valley of old coalmines and new vineyards, working out how to live in a deconsecrated church.

What to do with all that vertical space, those oppressive stained-glass windows? Can a church become a home or, even with all its vestiges removed, will it remain forever what it was intended to be?

For Zoe, alone and troubled by a ghost from the recent past, the little church seems empty of the possibilities Nick enthused about. She is stuck in purgatory – until a determined young teacher pushes her way into Zoe's life, convinced of her own peculiar mission for the building.

Melanie has something of Nick's unquenchable zeal about her. And it's clear to Zoe that she won't take no for an answer.

left a lot to be desired

the storyline diverged leaving the reader wanting to hear more of one part before spinning off into the next.

Meditative, moving and original

The characters were very vivid to me. I very much liked the way the story stayed with one point of view. It was meditative yet also moved forward with various occurrences. In this era of ‘grand designs’, ‘tiny houses’ I found it very easy to picture what the main character Zoe might be wrestling with. I am quietly hopeful that there’ll be a followup novel about Melanie because the author leaves us with more than a little intrigue about the turn her life has taken. I found the audio narration a little bit stilted sometimes, but I guess there are lots of different ways to interpret where to put emphasis in a sentence. Overall I found it very well paced to listen to. And Amanda Lohrey’s writing shines through, a gentle yet steady, honest and unsentimental eye. Rich themes of spirituality, psychology, boundaries between healing and healer, place, long term relationships and environment. And most importantly, a human story with characters that are very rich and I didn’t want to say goodbye to!

Thought-provoking

I liked the gradual narrative unfold. But most of all, the look into Zoe’s mind / soul / heart at a key turning point in her life. I liked the slowness and the gradual changes happening in her and of our growing sense (visual and otherwise) of the small town and its surrounds. Less sure about some of the narration, particularly of some of the other characters, who came across in a bit of a mould. Great narration overall though.

Slow and pointless

I keep waiting to engage with the characters or feel some investment in the story itself, but this never happened. The characters didn't even form bonds with each other let alone encourage the reader to care about them, or their outcomes. Story moved slow and with no real purpose. The writing was good, the narration was good, it was simply the story that was lacking substance. Will be returning this title.

Performance was engaging…story was average.

I had high hopes for another Lohrey novel, but this one fell flat. Some imagery and overarching metaphors were well conceived, however they failed to land by the story’s conclusion. Underdeveloped sub characters were a lost opportunity. Interesting enough to finish, but only just…

too slow

very little happens in the story making for a rather boring listen. I found it difficult to relate to the main character
